Prof.
Lian Zhang
Director , Flagship Project Lead Investigator
Monash University
Prof Zhang obtained a PhD in Applied Chemistry in 2003 from the Department of Applied Chemistry at Chubu University, Japan. He is one of the 200 inaugural Future Fellowship Awardees across Australia, with a specific research focus on high-temperature thermodynamics and process intensification.
Before coming to Australia in 2009, Prof Zhang worked primarily on clean coal technologies, including direct coal liquefaction (DCL), coal combustion and flue gas cleaning, solvent extraction of coal for ultra-clean fuel production, and waste incineration. Since 2009, Prof Zhang has broadened his research interests to encompass a wide range of topics, from waste valorisation to carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), as well as catalytic processes. His current research projects include catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass, plastics, and scrap tires; oxy-firing catalyst regeneration; methane dry reforming with intensified CO2 reduction; and advanced characterisation of nano-sized heterogeneous catalysts using both bench-top and synchrotron-based facilities.
